Ephesians 5:22-33 speaks on marriage. It says how a wife is to behave towards her husband and how a husband is to behave towards his wife. It clearly speaks on the parallel of marriage on one hand and Christ and the church on the other hand.
Ephesians 5:23 says,For the husband is head of the wife , as also Christ is head of the church. Now God is spirit and He wants to make Himself known physically. No one can actually see the relationship between Christ and the church, but marriage is a physical representation of that.
In marriages, husbands and wives are a representation of Christ and the church.
Just as Christ went to the point of death for the Church, husbands are called in the same vein to sacrifice for their wives. Wives on the other hand are to emulate the HUMILITY the Church has in reverence of Christ as a result of His sacrifice to save her.
There is lack of clarity to some couples as to whether LOVE should precede HUMILITY or vice versa. Whether the wife should submit to the husband as the Church is humble onto Christ to elicit a reciprocal gesture of LOVE.
But the truth is, LOVE preceded HUMILITY on the cross. Christ first LOVED us whilst we were yet sinners and still LOVES us despite the fallibility of some. He did not demand HUMILITY before He humbled Himself onto death for us. He paid the price hence we submit to His Lordship.
It is therefore exemplary that husbands should first LOVE NO MATTER WHAT to elicit submission and humility from wives.
LOVE preceded HUMILITY to the cross.
