Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Hebrews 13:4
"You shall not commit adultery." Exodus 20:14
Our society has painted adultery as exciting and fun, with no consequences, because everyone does it. It even seems to be celebrated on TV shows. Hollywood never shows the flip side of adultery – the hurt and destruction following sin.
There are severe consequences for adultery. It not only impacts the two people involved, but those consequences extend down to others. Children are affected, your co-workers are affected, and your church is affected. NO SIN IS PRIVATE. OTHERS WILL ALWAYS BE HURT.
The Bible teaches us to flee from sexual immorality. We can become prayer warriors who will pray that our loved ones will escape from it and not open the door to the temptations of the flesh.
We need to be like Jesus Christ and speak the truth to others about the effects of adultery instead of saying nothing, which may be construed as approval. Let's look at what the Bible says about adultery.
My son, pay attention to my wisdom, turn your ear to my words of insight, that you may maintain discretion and your lips may preserve knowledge. For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil; but in the end she is bitter as gall, sharp as a double-edged sword. Her feet go down to death; her steps lead straight to the grave. Proverbs 5:1-5
Our society acts as if adultery is acceptable. There is no shame. Your spouse may even be acting as if an affair with another person is not wrong. Don't be confused; it is morally wrong. Make time to read Proverbs, Chapter 5.
May your fountain be blessed, and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth. A loving doe, a graceful deer - may her breasts satisfy you always, may you ever be intoxicated by her love Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife? Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman? Proverbs 5:18-20
It is possible to love the sinner but hate the act of adultery and all that it represents. How is your heart? An impure heart will corrupt one's thoughts, feelings, words, and actions. You need to pray for yourself, your spouse, and your children to have a transformed heart, seeking to be more like the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ every day.
You need to fight against feelings of unforgiveness, anger, bitterness, jealousy, adultery, and all selfishness. Beware, the enemy will tempt you with someone else when the Lord is moving on the other side of the mountain!
"But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander." Matthew 15:18-19
Your spouse has fallen into Satan's trap of sin. Sin is wrong, and there will be consequences to that sin. Just as Jesus had mercy on the woman in the Bible caught in adultery (John 8:10-11), he would say to your spouse today, "Go, leave your life of adultery."
Lay your spouse and any other person at the Lord's feet and allow the Lord to deal with their sin. Your responsibility is to forgive your enemies. Your Lord God knows everything.
Never stop praying that your husband or wife will turn their hearts toward their Lord Jesus Christ and then go home. Have you surrendered your personal life to Jesus Christ as Lord to follow Him, being in the will of God daily? God has a perfect plan and purpose for your marriage if you are willing to follow Him in obedience. Pray that your husband or wife will obey the Holy Spirit's voice and flee from their sin. Hate the sin but love the sinners. Do not give up on God or your beloved spouse!
