I would like to start off by saying everyone has material things. When the need for possessions becomes obsessive it is not only sinful, it is dangerous. Materialism is idolatry and it never leads to godliness. The best things in life aren't things. Things are only obstacles that get in the way of an eternal perspective. One day you will realize that material things mean nothing. All that matters is the well-being of the people in your life.
What are Material Possessions? Anything that you possess becomes your property and it is known as a “material” possession. It is something you can touch and keep safe for as long as you want. If a person is too attached to his material possessions, he is said to be “materialistic”. A materialistic person is a person who is markedly more concerned with material things than with spiritual, intellectual, or cultural values. an adherent of philosophical materialism.
Definitions of material possession. Property or belongings that are tangible. synonyms: tangible possession. type of: belongings, holding, property. something owned; any tangible or intangible possession that is owned by someone.
The Bible teaches that trusting God involves holding very lightly to the things of this world. If we gather material things to ourselves, we will naturally have a vested interest in maintaining them. So, Jesus commanded us not to focus our lives on gaining wealth and possessions, but on serving him.
Ecclesiastes 5:13 tells us wealth hoarded does so to the harm of the owner; Isaiah 23:18 tells us that those who don't hoard their wealth, their profits will go toward abundant food and fine clothes; and James 5:3 tells us if you hoarded wealth in the last days your gold or silver will be corroded and eat your flesh...
If there was ever a summary verse that depicts the battle between good and evil, heaven and the world, it would be Matthew 6:19-21. The reference to "treasures on earth" speaks to the intoxication of worldly pleasures, while "treasures in heaven" points to spiritual blessings which have infinite, eternal value.
Studies confirm it. Buying material things don't make us happy. ... It may result in temporary joy for some, but the happiness found in buying a new item rarely lasts longer than a few days. Researchers even have a phrase for this temporary fulfillment: retail therapy.
Bible says:
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
